يتكون الفريق المتحكم في شبكة الانترنت من 14 شخصا كل فرد من هذا الفريق يحمل مفتاحا شخصيا وعند جمع هذه المفاتيح يتكون المفتاح الرئيسي المسؤول عن إدارة شبكة الإنترنت حول العالم .
وينقسم هذا الفريق الى قسمين القسم الأول يتكون من 7 أفراد هم حاملي المفاتيح الأساسية بينما القسم الثاني والذي يتكون من الـ 7 أفراد المتبقيين هم حاملى المفاتيح الإحتياطية.
يعقد هذا الفريق 4 إجتماعات خلال العام الواحد كما أن ما يميز هؤلاء الأشخاص عن غيرهم من المستخدمين هو مهاراتهم العالية في مجال الحماية المعلوماتية بالإضافة لهذا كله لا يسمح لأي دولة من دول العالم أن تمثل أكثر من شخص واحد من أفراد الفريق مما يجعله فريقا متعدد الجنسيات.
هدف كل فرد من الفريق هو حماية شبكة الـ DNS حيث يوجد العديد من مستويات الحماية يتم الإهتمام بها والتحكم فيها عن طريق منظمة ICANN أو Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers و التي تتحكم في النظام.
